Akumal means "place of the turtles" in the Mayan language. The white sandy beaches at Akumal Bay and Half Moon Bay are beautiful and the ocean is ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Sea turtles can be found in Akumal laying their eggs in the sand at night throughout the nesting season (end of April to October). These are protected and cherished by the people of Akumal. You also may see some turtles as you swim in the clear blue sea.
