3 ways in which sports tourism is promoted in Quintana Roo

Have you ever wondered, “how is it possible for tourism and sports to collide and interrelate?”. Well, that is what sports tourism is all about. These two concepts intertwine when sports-related activities attract different people to a destination, whether as participants, visitors, or simply spectators at an event or attraction.

Now, here are three ways in which sports tourism is promoted in the state of Quintana Roo: 

  1. Sport Fishing

Throughout the year, different tournaments are held in different venues in the state, such as Playa del Carmen, Cancun, Cozumel, Mahahual, Isla Mujeres, Holbox, Chetumal, and Xpu-Ha, in which distinct modalities are managed, such as trolling, fly fishing, riparian or kayak fishing. These events and activities attract diverse athletes and teams from all over the country, as well as from different countries such as Belize. 

  1. Triathlon

When it comes to tournaments of triathlon, in Quintana Roo you can find a great variety, from medium and long triathlon to Olympic and sprint triathlon. These events are held in diverse areas of the state such as Cozumel, Bacalar, and Playa del Carmen. The IRONMAN 70.3 Cozumel and IRONMAN Cozumel championships are some of the most anticipated of the year, hosting athletes from all over the world. 

  1. Open Water Swimming

In this área of the Mexican Caribbean, some marathons and open water swimming take place in cities such as Puerto Morelos, Bacalar, and Cancun. The most outstanding events are El Cruce and Iron Swim, which are international championships, in which hundreds of participants from all over the world swim different distances from Cancun to Isla Mujeres.

 In the marvelous state of Quintana Roo, this type of tourism is being promoted more and more, since it originates several benefits to the host location; for example, it reactivates and generates economic activities, as well as diversifies the economy, promotes the image and beauty of the destination, just as it differentiates it from others, and the sporting event becomes a huge part of the tourist attraction of the place.
