A Local’s Guide to Good Food At Cozumel

Welcome back, this time to the gastronomic paradise that is Cozumel – where every bite is a symphony of flavors, and every meal is an adventure waiting to be savored. As a seasoned local with taste buds finely attuned to the island's culinary secrets, let me be your guide to what I believe to be must-visit restaurants that will leave you craving for more. From Italian delicacies to authentic Mexican delights, Cozumel has it all, and I'm here to spill the beans on where to find the best grub.

1.    La Cucina Italiana

Nestled in the heart of downtown Cozumel, La Cucina Italiana is a culinary gem that transports you straight to the streets of Italy. As a pasta lover, I can attest that their homemade pasta dishes are nothing short of divine. Whether you opt for the classic spaghetti or indulge in something with seafood, each bite is a revelation of flavor.

I must say I’m biased since I used to visit this place on every single one of my birthdays growing up, so nostalgia might be influencing me a bit, but they offer the coziest atmosphere, and they treat you with much love.

Pro tip: Buy their flavorful water jars to pair with your meal.

2.    La Choza

For a taste of authentic Mexican cuisine, look no further than La Choza. Tucked away from the touristy spots, this cozy eatery is a favorite among locals for its hearty dishes and warm hospitality. Owned by a big family that treats you as one of their own the moment you arrive, they serve from amazing fajitas to mouthwatering chiles rellenos, every dish is a celebration of Mexico's rich culinary heritage. My personal recommendation? Try their menu of the day– it includes flavored water, soup, and the main dish.

And the best part is their award (don’t know if it has, but it should) salsa is one flavor explosion you won't forget, you’ll sure be taking a bottle back home with you, I know I have.

3.    Casa Misión

If you're in the mood for a culinary adventure with a side of breathtaking views, Casa Misión is the place to be. A grand hacienda with gardens covered in exotic flowers and majestic birds, this upscale restaurant offers a dining experience like no other. Trust me an order a tampiqueña, this dish is like an introduction to Mexican cuisine. And don't forget to save room for dessert – their flan is the perfect sweet ending to a memorable meal.

I’m also biased here, since I grew up eating here after school with my dad and grandma, therefore I know and love the entire staff, which is why I know they’ll treat you like a member of their family.

4.    Camilo's

With its laid-back vibe and mouthwatering seafood dishes, Camilo's is a local favorite for good reason. Situated in downtown San Miguel, they serve some of the freshest seafood on the island. From ceviche tostadas to grilled lobster tail, every dish is a testament to the bounty of the sea. My grandam highly recommends their shrimp cocktail.

Last year tragedy struck this fantastic restaurant and the owner, who my dad knew and cared for, passed away, leaving the business behind for his family. Our best wishes go to them during their hardships, and we hope you give yourself the chance to check them out.

5.    Sky Reef

Looking for a dining experience with a side of adventure? Look no further than Sky Reef. This beach club not only offers stunning ocean views but also a variety of water sports activities to keep you entertained. After working up an appetite, indulge in their mouthwatering fish tacos or opt for their fried octopus (I’ve been dreaming about it the last couple of weeks). And don't forget to wash it all down with one of their signature cocktails – the perfect way to toast to another day in paradise.

There you have it, fellow foodies – a culinary journey through my favorite restaurants at Cozumel. Whether you're craving Italian classics, authentic Mexican dishes, or fresh seafood, Cozumel has something to satisfy every palate. Make sure to grab a fork, pull up a chair, and get ready to embark on a culinary adventure you won't soon forget. ¡Buen provecho!
